Functional Crown Lengthening in Berwyn, IL
Functional crown lengthening may be needed with Dr. Timothy Walsh when cosmetic or restorative procedures are recommend for a tooth that has become decayed, is broken below the gum line, or when there is insufficient structure for a tooth restoration procedure. In these cases, Dr. Walsh will need to reshape the gums and supporting bone tissue to make room for a high quality restoration.
The Crown Lengthening Procedure
Dr. Walsh may recommend a functional crown lengthening procedure before having any type of cosmetic or restorative procedure. Crown lengthening may be necessary when a tooth has become decayed, is broken below the gum line, or if there is not enough supportive structure available for a crown, bridge, or deep filling. Dr. Walsh will need to lower the gum and bone levels to expose more of the root surface for the restoration procedure. He may need to reshape the gums and supporting bone, in addition to trimming back the gum line.
This procedure is similar in scope to the esthetic crown lengthening procedure and is typically performed under local anesthesia. Dr. Walsh will need to make small incisions to remove the gum tissue and reshape the area. After the procedure is complete, Dr. Walsh will place sutures around the treated area which will be removed within a couple of weeks. The final restoration process can take place after the gums have healed in six to eight weeks.
When excess gum tissue could interfere with a tooth restoration procedure, you may be a good candidate for gum reduction surgery before any restorative work can be completed.
