Gum Graft in Westmont, IL
Receding gums are one of the most noticeable signs of progressing gum disease and occur when the gum tissue moves down the root of the tooth structure. Gum recession in Westmont, IL may occur around a single tooth or several teeth, and symptoms include root sensitivity, inflammation of the gum tissue, and aesthetic concerns. It is very important that you have treatment for gum recession with Dr. Timothy Walsh because the gums serve as a barrier to bacteria.
Cosmetic Benefits
If you are embarrassed by the amount of tooth showing when you smile or think that you have very large teeth, you may enjoy some cosmetic benefits from the gum grafting procedure. Gum disease can cause significant loss of the tissue that keeps your teeth in place and a gum graft may be needed to restore the gums to a more attractive level. This can also help to improve the overall health of the teeth and gums. Dr. Walsh will determine which type of gum grafting procedure is most appropriate for you based on the degree of gum recession in your mouth.
Connective Tissue Grafts
These are the most common types of grafts and are often used to treat root exposure around a single tooth or several teeth. The procedure involves cutting a small flap of skin from the roof of the mouth and removing tissue from under the flap. The flap is sutured and the sample is secured to the gum tissue that surrounds the exposed tooth roots and will integrate with the tissue over time.
Free Gingival Grafts
These are similar to connective tissue grafts except that instead of cutting a flap, the tissue is taken directly from the roof of the mouth. The tissue is then grafted to the gum area in need.
Pedicle Grafts
In this procedure, gum tissue is grafted from existing tissue around the tooth that needs to be repaired. The pedicle is partially cut away so that only an edge remains attached and then the flap is pulled over to cover the exposed root and sutured in place.
When you do not have enough gum tissue around the teeth, bacteria can infiltrate the area and cause tooth decay, gum disease, or even tooth loss. If you want to learn more about having a gum graft in Westmont, IL or think you may need treatment for gum recession, set up your consultation today!
